Turkey Earthquake: Remembrance and Reconstruction 23 Years On

A Devastating Catastrophe

In August 1999, the small town of Golcuk became the epicenter of a magnitude-7.4 earthquake that devastated northwestern Turkey. The quake, centered in the Izmit province, left a trail of destruction, leveling buildings, cutting off power, and claiming countless lives.

Tragic Aftermath

The earthquake's impact was catastrophic. The stench of rotting corpses filled the air as rescue workers searched through the twisted remains of apartment buildings. The death toll reached tens of thousands, and thousands more were left homeless and injured.
